"We
mustn’t keep feeling sorry for ourselves in terms of decisions that we’re not
getting. I think it would have been a great boost for the team to come back
home and go to one nil up through that penalty as it was a minute and so many
seconds later we were one nil down through a moment of defensive slackness and
you can’t use the non-giving of the penalty as an excuse for our defensive
slackness. We’ve got to make sure that we are better in all aspects of our game
going forward we weren’t threatening enough and in defence we were sloppy and
those are the bigger issues.
There’s no
question we keep going on about it and keep harping back to it, we’ve lost a
lot of resolve in losing Keane and Laird from the back four and we’ve not
looked as gritty or as purposeful going forward since those two key players
have gone. We need to do something about that we need to add some grit and add
some resolve and that’s been at the forefront of my mind since the window
opened."
Somebody
said to me just now that the back four didn’t look like they’ve ever played
together before and of course they probably haven’t, maybe it’s their second
game together. Jack King as you know is an attacking central midfielder playing
at full back. He’s had to adapt to playing in League one and adapt to playing
in the back four because of the circumstances. I’ve been talking long and hard
this week about trying to bring a right back in and I think it’s important for
us to do it I think we need some grit and resolve back in and we need
experienced defenders at this level because as you can see it’s lacking."
"We
look back over the 90 minutes and we’ll see a lot of possession and chances
here and chances there that have gone a begging but you know the scoreline is
the scoreline and we can’t shy away from that we have to make sure we put our
focus on getting ourselves together. We’ve had a really long chat in there as a
group of players and management afterwards. The players are looking to solve
the problems, they have answers to the problems and it’s my job to make sure we
capatalise. On the other hand when you bring a squad of players together a
fresh and you lose big influences sometimes you have got to accept you have to
bring equally big influences in to give yourself the type of strength that’s
needed to win games."
"We
need to do some work on the training ground but we also need to probably do
some work together off the training ground as well. One of the things the lads
were saying afterwards was Gaffer, as people we don’t feel like we’re in an
environment where we’re doing that little bit extra for our mate because we’re
all so new together we haven’t developed the relationships to the level that
you need when you are playing winning football. You kind of do that bit extra
and we’re not playing winning football and we’re probably not doing that big
extra for each other and we’re probably playing as individuals and we probably
are individuals. What we could probably do with is some time just to get to
know each other just that little bit more and I understand what they mean in
the concept of team building in how important it can be to get the friendships
and the relationships right do that extra bit that you can give gets given so
the boys are very focussed on that they aren’t looking to run away and hide
from it like I’m not. They are happy to face up to the issues and play their
part in putting things straight."
